The draw for the 2nd FIFA Club World Championship Spain 2001, held on 6 March at the Congress Centre in La Coruña, provided for some thrilling encounters.

Current Spanish champion Deportivo La Coruña will kick off the 12-team tournament against Argentine side Boca Juniors,on Saturday 28 July at their Riazor home ground. OFC champions Wollongong Wolves of Australia and African cup winners Zamalek FC of Egypt complete Group A.

In order to make sure that the last two matches in each group are played simultaneously, San Lázaro was chosen as an additional venue for a the Group A duel between Boca Juniors and Wollongong on Saturday, 4 August.

Palmeiras in Group B will have to come up with the goods against CD Olimpia of Honduras, Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia and UEFA Super Cup winners Galatasaray from Turkey, while in Group C, Real Madrid will take on the US team LA Galaxy, Hearts of Oak from Ghana and J.League's Jubilo Iwata.

The group winners and the best second-placed team go through to the semi-finals.

The 2nd FIFA Club World Championship will end with the match for third place and the final on 12 August at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

UEFA has confirmed that Galatasaray SK will represent Europe together with Real Madrid of Spain at the second edition of the FIFA Club World Championship will take place from 29 July to 12August 2001 in Spain.

Palmeiras (Brazil) - Winners Copa Libertadores 1999
Atlético Boca Juniors (Argentina) - Winners Copa Libertadores 2000

Real Madrid (Spain) - Winner of the 2000 UEFA Champions League
Galatasaray SK (Turkey) - Winner of the 2000 UEFA Super Cup

The format is three groups of four teams with the top teams of each groupand the best second qualifying for the semi-finals. Also confirmed are the venues, namely in Madrid the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and the Estadio Vicente Calderón as well as the Estadio Riazor in La Coruña.
